A Show Dealing With Entrepreneurship

I’m not much of a TV watcher but the other night my roommates were watching a show called America’s Next Great Restaurant, so I sat down and checked it out. I was amazed about how much it related to our Creative Entrepreneurship course.

The basis of the show involves people/contestants creating their entrepreneurial restaurant chain, and competing to win over four possible judges/investors and the prize would be the opportunity to open three restaurants in three different locations, New York City, Minneapolis, and Hollywood. Basically they are competing to see who comes up with the most entrepreneurial idea for a restaurant.

After a nationwide search the top 20 contestants had to give their idea pitch in front of the judges and then the group was eliminated down to the final 10 ideas and contestants. It was entertaining to listen to what the judges discussed because it’s exactly what we have been talking about in class. On one of the ideas they wondered if the target market would be large enough to have a steady flow of customers, which is one of the concepts we have had to decide upon for our own ideas. Another big concept we discussed is how will shopping at our business make the customer feel, and this was also a concern of the judges on the show. All the judges were thrilled when they heard one idea which involved a sports type idea, that when a person’s order is done their name gets called and everybody working cheers for that person. Even more important than the food the judges said is the way the customer feels when purchasing from the restaurant.

It was interesting to see the points we discuss in class be practiced in this show and to see how others are trying to succeed entrepreneurially.

I caught an episode of the show and I also thought about our class . They were designing their logos on the episode I saw. What I found Interesting was that the lady who was eliminated that day had a business background. The judges did not care for her because she did not seem to be taking their advice or criticism. Maybe sometime it is better the less you know, so you can be open to be taught.

Yeah it’s interesting to see how it relates to what we have discussed in class and to see what motivates the investors in their decisions.
