My Recent Blue Ocean Product Purchase

Last semester I took the course, Introduction to Marketing, in which we discussed a blue ocean and what it was all about. In this course we are exploring further in to the blue ocean by reading and discussing Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne. This had me thinking, have I fallen victim to this blue ocean strategy? Was I part of a target market of a blue ocean product or service?

As expected, yep I did. Last month a new video game was released for the Playstation 3 (PS3) system and for PC called DC Universe Online. This game is considered a massive multiplayer online (MMO) game like World of Warcraft, except it’s based in the DC comic world with superheroes such as Superman and Batman. This game is the definition of a blue ocean product because no MMO game has ever been produced on a console such as the PS3 or Xbox 360. As a PS3 owner I was excited to have the chance to play an MMO on my PS3. There have been MMO’s for PC and some with a superhero basis, but none have had the giant license of using DC comics and its characters. Ever since I first started watching cartoons I was a huge fan of the DC superheroes and comics and as a PS3 owner interested in trying out an MMO the developers had me targeted perfectly.

This is a perfect time to create a game like this because superhero movies have flourished in the past couple years. The Dark Knight was one of the top movies, if not the best, the year it was released and it has sparked a huge increase in interest in superhero products, especially DC comic characters. This is another reason why the product has been so successful since its release.

This product targeted PS3 users that want to play an MMO and it also targeted fans of DC comics. This may not seem like a large target market, but the sales have proven this is untrue. Like all blue ocean products or services others will produce the same thing creating a red ocean where people will battle it out with the competition to be the best. Other MMOs are expected to be released for the PS3 in the next couple months creating that red ocean and only time will tell which product will come out on top.
